The Association of Farm & Forestry Contractors (FCI) appreciates TD Michael Healy-Rae’s contribution while Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with special responsibility for forestry, farm safety and horticulture.
His recognition of the key role that Agricultural and Forestry Contractors play in agriculture and his willingness to include our sector in relevant discussions was very much appreciated by FCI. His time in office brought attention and energy to critical areas, helping to drive initiatives that support safer farms, stronger forestry, and better wellbeing across rural communities. Public service in these sectors requires real engagement on the ground, Michael Healy-Rae put a that effort deserves a sincere thank you.

There’s been increasing concern in recent days from members about the position of Minister of State with responsibility for forestry, horticulture farm safety, and health, remaining unfilled.
These are not abstract issues. They go right to the heart of rural life. Contracting, forestry and
farming are among the most demanding and, at times, dangerous occupations in the country.
Progress in areas like safety awareness, mental health supports, and sustainable forestry
development depends heavily on clear leadership and continued focus at government level.
When a role like this is left vacant, even for a short period, it risks slowing the momentum behind vital programmes — whether that’s improving on-farm safety practices, supporting contractors and farmers through challenging periods, or advancing forestry policy that works for both sustainability and the environment.
Filling this position is not simply a matter of administration — it’s about ensuring that the needs of contactors, forestry workers, farmers and rural families remain front and centre.
Once this position has been filled, FCI looks forward to working with the new Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with special responsibility for forestry, farm safety and horticulture.
